Starland's
official Steering Committee Member's Meeting

November 13-15, 2009

This weekend, as with all committee meetings, Starland committee members will catch up on the past, current, and future inner workings of Starland.

Non-committee members may still visit Starland for their pleasure ($25/night) and may even join the committee meeting if invited.
Please make your reservation here

On the agenda will be items like old and new construction, house upgrades, cabin construction and upgrading. Whatever is possible at the time. At Starland, the community shifts and so the focus must fallow. For example, last year we had at least two residents who were available to master some major construction tasks, but as of now there is no one.

Other agenda items concern how Starland functions as a community, how we can make new-comers and visitors more comfortable.

Your comments are welcome.

Also on the "agenda"...

As Matrix and friends attend, he (I) will be handling a few tasks... Friend, Jeff W., will come out to finalize making his 22' trailer donation (shown at left) available to future visitors, especially for the Winter Fae Gathering.

Next, Hollis needs help with the 27' trailer (shown at right) he bought from Matrix (me). The tires are going flat and we have to insert jack-stands underneath to make the trailer level. The picture at left is old and that stash of junk in front is gone.

And finally, Matrix (me) is presenting some plans to the committee for developing various parts of Starland, including building some extra cabins and/or storage facilities. The main proposed development is what I call a "Utility Complex." I want to portion a sizable section of Starland to contain everything that is "industrial" within a partitioned-off area. It will handle all the storage needs for tools and materials, including storage for "broken" things such as cars and other projects. Ultimately this "Utility Complex" would have a workshop or workshops for which to fix things, even cars. Ideally, the complex could even expand into other creative spaces for "industrial art construction" like welding or a ceramics studio... perhaps even some other kind of in-house industry which can help support Starland. I think the workshops are key.

So, I will need help in measuring and marking (staking out) the designated sections of Starland. After which I will design a set of very detailed instructions for generations of volunteers to fallow for the building of the complex and other projects. What fun!!

My idea is to build this complex near the entrance but inset from the driveway entrance and partially into the foothill of the crest that runs behind the Main house, but not behind the house itself. It wouldn't be noticed except for a wooden fence. Two sides of the rectangular complex will actually be retaining walls since the complex would be inset partially into the a hillside. The other two sides can be just a nice wood fence. A driveway entry path can be at the corner wide enough to bring in vehicles. A great part of this idea is to maintain esthetics, there will be a garden in front and taller trees or shrubs at the property line facing towards the neighborhood entrance. Now the rest of Starland can be nothing but gardens and "atmosphere." No stored junk to look at! And, this will free up some other very interesting spaces at the Starland Homestead. ... your comments are welcome! -email Matrix

This shows how the corner of the complex retaining wall, built of cement, block, and rebar, is set into the hillside and the wooden fence wrapped around the remaining corner.
We will also plan for an electrical supply, and potential plumbing (drainage and spigots) as well.
